20 may 2009 - The Grand Canyon, USA
The Grand Canyon National Park is situated in Arizona, USA. It contains the Grand Canyon itself. The area around the Grand Canyon became a national monument in 1908 and was designated a national park in 1919.
It has an extensive system of tributary canyons, with many conbinations and layers of colourful rocks dating back to Precambrian times. It was created through the incision of the Colorado River and its tributaries after the Colorado Plateau was uplifted and the Colorado River system developed along its present path.
Helicopter tours offer a breathtaking view of the Grand Canyon, over the Hoover Dam and towards Las Vegas. If you wish you can also go horseback riding at the Kaibab Plateau Visitors Center, following a scenic route through a forest that begins at Jacob Lake. The center itself also has several exhibits on show.
There are many trails to follow, the Bright Angel Point holds some of the finest views and starts at the Grand Canyon Lodge. The Bright Angel Trailhead is another trail at Phantom Ranch. This trail was originally created by bighorn sheep and was later used by the Hayasupai Indians. The Cape Royal is another good view point and from there you can see Angels Window, a huge hole. The Cliff Springs Trail holds fascinating ancient dwellings.
Another attraction is the IMAX Theater which has a 80 foot/ 24 meter wide screen. Here you will watch a short film showing the Grand Canyon from the air and rafters riding the rapids along the Colorado River.
