a travel guide to the world
23 apr 2009 - Kruger National Park South Africa
The Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and one of the largest in the world. It contains 18,989 square km of wilderness with 21 rest camps throughout. The park consists of 1,982 different species of plants, 517 species of birds and 147 species of mammals including the ‘Big Five’ ie. Lion, African elephant, African buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard.
Surrounded by miles and miles of abundant wildlife, you experience nothing like it whilst driving through this park. It is more advisable to visit in the winter months rather summer when the climate is cooler and more comfortable for travel, vegetation is less abundant than in summer months and the few waterholes attract many animals. Early evening and early morning is also the best time to spot big game. However some prefer summer with its lush plants and foliage, this is also the best season for bird watching. Having been myself this is one of my most favourite places and would definitely go back to again and again.
