Egypt holds many treasures and visitors are drawn world wide to visit this remarkable, fascinating country.
The pyramids in Egypt are well worth a visit. They were built as tombs for the Egyptian pharoahs during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. One of the first ever pyramid is the ‘Pyramid of Djoser’ built during the third dynasty and designed by the architect ‘Imhotep’. It is thought to be the world’s oldest monumental structures constructed of dressed masonry.
Giza, situated on the outskirts of Cairo, has some of the best examples of pyramids with some being the largest structures ever built. The largest pyramid of all is the ‘Pyramid of Khufu’. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in existence today.
On the west bank of the river Nile, on the Giza Plateau you will find the ‘Great Sphinx of Giza’. A statue of a lion with a human head. The largest monolith statue in the world and is believed to be built by the ancient Egyptians. The Great Sphinx faces East and has a small temple between its paws.
One of Egyptians greatest cities is Cairo full of mosques, churches and medeival gates to see and has many interesting little market places selling a wide variety of products. Worth a visit is the Mosque of Mohammed Ali as well as the Al-Asharmosque.
The Temples of Karnak, which was the greatest place of worship in ancient Egypt. Consists of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons and obelisks, all dedicated to the Theban gods. The Hypostile Hall in the Great Temple of Amun holds performances of a sound and light show, not to be missed.
The Valley of the Kings is situated on the ancient site of Thebes and this is the place you will find impressive tombs one of them known as Tutankhamun’s tomb. The treasures he was buried with are now placed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, another must see!
