Airtel subscribers in India can now send tweets at standard rates and receive tweets for free according to the twitter blog. The deal is not exclusive however, as other India mobile operators will come on board over the coming months.
Users can send tweets from their Airtel mobile cell phones Re. 1. Airtel is offering people in every city, village, remote taluk and even the smallest panchayat, the chance to connect to Twitter with no additional fees.
Twitter SMS updates were available in India a year ago, but later Twitter suspended the SMS updates because of high costs. Subscribers can begin their Twitter service by texting START to 53000 from their Airtel mobile cell phone.
