India will introduce Mobile Number Portability (MNP) on December 31st 2009. This allows users to retain their number even if they switch operators. The new service will be introduced in two phases, firstly in the metro cities and Category A telecom zones and in other areas by March 20th 2010.

According to he Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) website, "increasing competition between the service providers and acts as a catalyst for the service providers to improve their quality of service."

The move is widely expected to intensify competition between Indian mobile phone companies, with new companies such as Telenor, Etisalat and Batelco set to join the market in the wake of the announced changes.

The regulator also notified certain charges associated with MNP and said switching charges for users must not exceed 19 rupees.
