06 mar 2010 - Sudip's Handbags
I was graduated in visual arts in 1996 from Govt. College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta and in 1997 went through a certificate course in fashion bags from Cordwainers College, in London and then attended the ¡®Modelist-Designer of Leather Goods Course¡¯ of June at ARS ARPEL school in Milan, Italy under UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) From there, I worked as a handbag designer for nine years in a design studio here in Kolkata.
As I felt my creative freedom was restricted, I left the job and joined my friend's software company as a graphic designer and worked for six months learning different skills. But, my urges to make bags remained strong and as I had bought two essential machines (Cylinder arm sewing machine and Skiving machine) earlier - finally started as a freelance designer. After the machines were there I started with a project of making bags for all my cousin's sisters (ten bags) as gifts for a social ceremony and that was a immediate hit, made of canvas and thin stripes of leather collected from the factory waste.

Leather itself is so unique material that I get inspired by its look and "feel" (I mean the touch) and that's how I got inspirations for those bags in the photographs sent. And also the very fact of a bag being worn by the end user is very exciting. My target audience are always those who prefer something different and unique and that's what I always strive to incorporate in my styles.

My biggest nightmare to date is that once I was making a bag in Ostrich leather while working in the design studio, and after three days of constant work, at the time of final assembling of the pieces I realized a major pattern mistake and the bag was deformed. I felt like committing suicide. However, I managed to correct it on the next day. In the whole process my achievement is the ability to work in multidisciplinary platforms and also the exposure I got while persuading the course in Milan and London and the opportunity to learn from the experts who visited our studio frequently as a part of the training programme under UNDP (United Nations Development Programme)... Whatever I am now is because of them.
